About The Book

Dick Sand is a fifteen-year-old boy who finds himself as the sole survivor of a shipwreck. He is rescued by Captain Hull and his crew on board the schooner Pilgrim. However Dick soon discovers that Captain Hull and his crew are slave traders and they plan to capture and sell the natives of Africa. Determined to stop the slave trade Dick Sand takes command of the schooner and becomes a captain at a young age. With the help of a faithful black servant named Nan he navigates the seas and encounters various challenges and dangers including storms hostile tribes and encounters with wild animals. Throughout the novel Verne explores themes of morality responsibility and the coming-of-age journey of the young protagonist.
