Dimensions and Determinants of Rural-Urban Migration in Ethiopia

About The Book

In Ethiopia there are towns where the population growth has been increasing during recent years not only because of natural increase but also as a result of migration processes. Hosanna town is one of which has experienced an accelerated growth rate of population as a result of in-migration. This study deals with the background of migration review of related literature the nature and characteristics of migrants the determinants of the rural push and urban pull factors and consequences of migration on various aspects of socio-economic lives of the people in both the areas of origin and destination. Most of migrants migrate to the town are of rural origin. The majority of them are in their most productive ages both demographically and economically. The town itself hardly seems to be in any feasible way capable of absorbing the excessive inflow of migrants nor has the investment capacity to add to its urban resources and engrossing the migrants above its capacity.A large number of migrants were single (75%) out of sampled migrants when they came to Hosanna town. Most of the migrants had formal education.
