Disaster management is a multi-disciplinary area which deals with monitoring forecasting evacuating search and rescue relief and rehabilitation. It also requires multi-sectoral governance as it involves scientists planners administrators volunteers and local communities at large. The present study is an honest attempt to decipher the destructive dimension of the flood and landslide calamity of 2018 and 2019 that ravaged Kerala State which is unprecedented in its severity. The calamity further has its roots in the mindless exploitation of nature and the irrational utilization of natural resources by men along with extreme precipitation mainly during the August days. The author offers a succinct explanation of the disaster situation by linking the history and geography of Kerala with the calamity-ridden crisis. It also provides relevant statistical and cartographical data in the form of village-based devastation reports glimpses of immediate impact and highlights the movement of the Rebuild Kerala Initiative. It is hoped that the comprehensive content of the book would enlighten the general reader about the disaster situation which overturned the fortunes of Kerala.
