About The Book

This volume of the six book Discover Hawaiis nature series teaches young readers about the nature of Hawaiis seashores. Readers learn about the role of currents and waves that form the beach where sand comes from and what causes the many colors of sands on different beaches. They learn some interesting facts about the lives and habits of common ocean plants and animals they are likely to find washed up along our beaches as well as animals like ōhiki (ghost crab) and plants like pōhuehue (beach morning glory) that live along the beaches. They also learn about special visitors to the beach including monk seals sea turtles and a variety of shorebirds. Readers learn what tides are and how changing tides affect the nature of seashore life. This book helps young seashore explorers identify some of the many curious and beautiful creatures they might find as they journey from the higher rocks along the shore that only get salt spray and occasional big waves to life that stays submerged among the shallow rocks and sands in tidepools. Readers discover special areas called limestone benches and anchialine pools and learn what to look for that lives in these places. All living systems in nature need our respect and protection and Hawaiian seashores are no exception. This book like others in the Discover series concludes with some suggestions of simple things each one of us can do to help. Full color illustrations on every page. Text and illustrations are equally balanced throughout the book.
