Distance English Language Learning in Algeria

This study aims at investigating students' attitudes as well as the effectiveness of distance English language learning in developing the academic achievements of mechanical engineering students in the four language skills: listening speaking reading and writing. To this end a comparative experimental design was chosen. Thirty volunteering students were assigned into three groups of ten students each. The groups received the same intensive ESP course presented through three different methods: (1) Traditional method; (2) Distance learning method (asynchronous delivered via email); and (3) Language lab method. Computerised self-designed pre-test and post-test were used to measure students' achievement before and after the intervention. In addition to the pre- and post-tests a paper-based questionnaire aiming to measure students' attitudes opinions and preferences was administered at the end of the experience. The data collected were subject to a deep statistical analysis using SPSS version 20.
