The Brazilian educational system has expanded over the last 30 years in terms of access by the population especially in distance learning. However access alone does not guarantee student retention the quality of education or success in completing studies. In this context one issue that deserves attention is school dropout the causes of which may be rooted in different social and institutional aspects. With a view to identifying alternatives to solve the problem of school dropout this work presents strategies to combat dropout through the implementation of pedagogical practices that resulted in the return of 272 students who had dropped out of a school in the Amazon region. It also reports on the development of action research in practice involving various actors in the educational process and the knowledge produced from this experience. Therefore this is a work that cannot be missing from the bookshelf. It is dedicated to all managers teachers and researchers in the field of education who are concerned with developing strategies to combat school dropout and who aim to contribute to student retention and success and the improvement of education.
