DISTRACTION OSTEOGENESIS

Distraction osteogenesis (DO) in orthodontics is a surgical method that leverages the body''s natural ability to regenerate bone in order to gradually lengthen or reposition jaw bones by inducing a controlled fracture followed by slowly separating the bone segments with a specialized device. This process creates a gap that allows new bone to develop making it an effective solution for addressing severe craniofacial deformities when traditional orthodontic treatments are inadequate. The technique necessitates close collaboration between the orthodontist and the surgeon to effectively plan and oversee the distraction procedure ensuring the optimal alignment of both teeth and bone throughout and after the process.
