About The Book

Excerpt from Documents Illustrative of the Social and Economic History of the Danelaw: From Various Collections

The contrast revealed by Domesday between the social order of the Danelaw and that of the south and west of England governs the interpretation of all the later phases of early English history. It is true that many different forms of agrarian economy diversify the great region which in the twelfth century was known as the Danelaw.1 The forces which produced the general disintegration of tenements already accomplished in East Anglia in the eleventh century must have been operating for a long time. Between the Welland and the Thames as also in Essex Changes had taken place since the Conquest which mask the ancient tenurial organization of this region.2 The continuity of the agrarian life of Yorkshire was broken by the devastation of 1069; the remarkable features which distinguish the society of the north in the twelfth century cannot be regarded as an inevitable development of the conditions of King Edward''s day. It is in the Shires between the Yorkshire border and the Welland the ancient territory of the Five Boroughs that a social system which may be referred in essentials to the Scandinavian settle ment of the ninth century has been least affected by the shock of the Norman Conquest or the obscurer processes of internal change.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
