Tragically Paul Jr. dies young shattering Dombey's dreams.</p><p>As the years pass Dombey remarries a proud and independent woman <strong>Edith Granger</strong> but their marriage is loveless and ends in disaster. Meanwhile Florence remains devoted to her father despite his neglect. Eventually Dombey's business fails and he loses his wealth and status. Only then does he begin to recognize the true value of love and family especially the unwavering affection of Florence who ultimately forgives and cares for him.</p><p>The novel is a powerful critique of materialism and emotional repression highlighting the redemptive power of love and humility.</p><p></p><p></p>
