Dr Sione Mangisi Anthology of Memories Tuukuunga Manatu 1916-1974

About The Book

This book is a collection of memories and anecdotes about Dr Sione Mangisi who was one of the first Tongans to be trained in Western medicine at the Central School of Medicine (CSU) in Suva Fiji. He graduated in 1938 the fifth Tongan to complete CSU's four year study program and the eighth overall to graduate as a medical practitioner. Then as they all did at that time he returned to Tonga to serve his community. He was part of an initiative set in place by the Tongan Government after the 1919-1920 Great Influenza Epidemic that devastated families throughout the Kingdom. The vision was to enable the Kingdom to manage its own health needs. The book is based on interviews and conversations with people who remember Dr Mangisi and his work including colleagues neighbours extended family and his now adult children. Together with photographs they have shared it is an Anthology of their memories of Dr Mangisi's life and service.
