Early Records Hampshire County Virginia Now West Virginia

About The Book

The Civil War as well as time took its toll in all counties of the South. The War of 1812 saw the destruction of the 1790 census of Virginia as well as other states and the Civil War resulted in many burned records throughout the South. Fortunately though many of the will books containing copied wills were burned many of the original documents often survived the destruction. The records contained in this publication include: Wills: From 1750s to 1860; Deeds Leases Mortgages and Other Instruments: To 1800; Marriage Records 1824-1828; State Census 1782 and 1784; and Revolutionary War pensioners in Hampshire County 1835. The index which contains approximately 11000 entries has been carefully compiled and while all has been alphabetically arranged in the body of the book every name appears in the index. Additionally all married women are listed under maiden name as well as their married name where this information could be determained. Paperback (1939) 2006 2011 Index 174 pp.
