The Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) was a flagship program of the Ministry of Rural Development. A Committee on Credit Related Issues under SGSY under the Chairmanship of Prof. Radhakrishna constituted in 2009 recommended adoption of a ‘Livelihoods Approach’ to rural poverty elimination. With a view to providing a sharper and greater focus as well as momentum for poverty reduction the Government of India restructured SGSY into National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) and was formally launched on June 3 2011. The general objective of the study is to understand the implementation of NRLM in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and assess its impact on women and their families.
