This publication arose from a research proposal submitted to the Swiss National Science Foundation. It deals with the educational opportunities available to young people in peripheral areas as there is no reliable data on this subject. Previous studies have focused primarily on educational opportunities in urban areas with the majority of them conducting contextual analyses. This project was the first to apply computer-based system analysis in this field. This approach closes a threefold gap in knowledge: (1) it assesses the situation with regard to educational opportunities from the perspective of the respondents (2) it identifies the factors influencing young people's choices with regard to educational opportunities and (3) it identifies the obstacles to action.
