Mitral stenosis which is a very common intricacy of chronic rheumatic heart disease often presents with respiratory symptoms. In developing countries like Bangladesh prevalence is much higher. Patient''s often treated as respiratory case and presents late. Multiple mechanisms including pulmonary congestion bronchial hyperactivity ventilation perfusion mismatch abatement of diffusion capacity etc. are responsible for symptoms. Pulmonary function tests in these patients also reveal as either obstructive or restrictive lung disease which are noted reversible. This book is about improvement of pulmonary function after successful relieving of mitral stenosis. Balloon dilatation mitigates the pulmonary congestion and consequent improvement in bronchial responsiveness. Thus early determination followed by beforehand intervention may help retrieval of morbidity and mortality associated with mitral stenosis.
