Efficacy of Artemisinin Derivatives on Schistosoma Mansoni in Mice

Artemisinin derivatives effect on Schistosoma mansoni compared to Praziquantel as regard to Schistosomula stage adult worms and Schistosomal fibrosis. Artemisinin derivatives could be considered as a highly efficient antischistosomal drug during early stage of schistosomiasis mansoni (juvenile stage) hence preventing disease progression and morbidity as compared to PZQ. On contrary Praziquantel is still considered the drug of choice in late stage of S. mansoni infection to overcome the morbidity from periportal hepatic fibrosis. Therefore Artemisinin derivatives is recommended to be used as a part of an integrated schistosomiasis control strategy among high risk groups in endemic area.
