A liberal Muslim intellectual and activist he writes columns for the Mumbai-based Hindi evening newspaper&nbsp;</span><em style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Mahanagar</em><span style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>&nbsp;and also for the Pakistani publication&nbsp;</span><em style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Akhbaar-e Jahaan</em><span style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>. He grew up in Mumbai which is the locale of his stories in the collection&nbsp;</span><em style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Ek Chhotaa sa Jahannum</em><span style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>&nbsp;(A Small Hell) one of which is about his schoolmate Dawood Ibrahim the don of the underworld. His Hindi short story collection&nbsp;</span><em style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>Soone ke Daant</em><span style=color: rgba(0 0 0 1)>&nbsp;(Gold Teeth) for which he received an award from the Prime Minister of India is based on the life of a prominent beef trader.</span></p><p><br></p>
