<p><i>El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha</i> often shortened to <i>Don Quixote</i> is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Published in two parts in 1605 and 1615 <i>Don Quixote</i> is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a foundational work of modern Western literature it is regarded by many as the first modern novel. </p> <p>The novel revolves around the adventures of Alonso Quixano a hidalgo who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his sanity and decides to set out to revive chivalry undo wrongs and bring justice to the world under the name Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer Sancho Panza as his squire who often uses a unique brand of earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical monologues. Don Quixote in the first part of the novel does not see the world for what it is and believes that he is righting wrongs; Don Quixote sees the world as he wishes it to be. </p><p>This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
