Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a non-traditional manufacturing process based on removing material from a part by means of a series of recurring electrical discharges between a tool and the workpiece in the presence of a dielectric fluid. Modern EDM machinery is capable of machining geometrically complex or hard material components that are precise and difficult-to-machine such as heat treated tool steels composites super alloys ceramics etc. Manufacturing materials with EDM shows an important aspects to study from the point of view of materials science heat transmission mechanics and manufacturing processes optimization. In a machining process the quality of surface finish is an important requirement for many machined workpieces. Taguchi technique followed by ANOVA is employed to study the performance characteristics in EDM of AISI 1045 tool steel which is mostly used in die industries. are Through this study not only the optimal cutting parameters but also the main cutting parameters that affect the cutting performance in EDM process can be found. Experimental results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
