This book summarizes the experiences of a polymer chemist collected during 40 years of applied materials science research mainly dedicated to polymers and their composites. The projects I mention here were related to the electrical (dielectric insulating conducting and breakdown) properties of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers and composites made of them. I try to give a general description of these properties starting from polymer chemistry and physics to relaxation spectroscopy and related characterization techniques. I take my examples from high-voltage engineering applications (cables composite insulators) and from conducting carbon-based composites. Topics covered include bulk and surface characterization accelerated aging tests and the effects of formulation on the electrical properties. I try to share practical details that may be useful for young engineers. I hope to show that applied materials research can be exciting and requires a broad theoretical background. As interludes between the main chapters I briefly share my personal experience collected in various work and research environments.
