About The Book

The book examines the role of emotions in protest. This allows us to understand how and why a protest or a social actor emerges and persists despite various obstacles including strong repression. It thus proposes to revisit several classic research problems such as motivations and the move to action recruitment the search for strategies to influence and achieve more far-reaching changes focusing on the various roles played by emotions in the strategies of social actors. The first chapter presents the historical and analytical context in which the emotional turn took place in the 2000s and the theoretical and methodological problems involved in the study of emotions. By means of different theoretical inputs it is proposed to make the relevance of the emotional approach more explicit. A second chapter examines in more detail the relationship between protest and repression in the light of Latin American contributions on high-risk activism and the emotional approach which has been developed in Latin America in the 2010s.
