Energy utilization is intrinsically related to the level of productivity in the various sectors of the economy. The intensive use of energy resources to propel the engine of development by countries usually comes with serious socio-economic and environmental consequences. Evidence from the global sphere indicates that energy utilization in most economic sectors especially those of the developing and least developed economies are carried out in unsustainable manner and this portends serious danger for sustainable development. Reducing the negative externalities of the use of energy has been described as one of the key socio-economic political and environmental challenges facing the world today. This study therefore employed a refined Divisia Index method known as Logarithmic Mean-weight Divisia Index (LMDI) approach to empirically examine the effect of energy efficiency determinants on energy consumption of economic sectors in ECOWAS countries for the period 1980-2015.Nine ECOWAS countries namely Nigeria Benin Republic Cote d'Ivoire Ghana Mali Togo Liberia Senegal and Gambia were selected for the study due to data availability.
