English Phonetics and Phonology. Theory and Practice follows the contents of various publications in the field (see the bibliography) being intended and designed as an auxiliary material meant to help students improve their knowledge and pronunciation abilities. The obvious question one could ask is “What can a book on English Phonetics and Phonology do for the potential reader?” The answer is quite simple. The study of both phonetics and phonology might help readers to learn more about language in general and English in particular. Quoting Beverley Collins and Inger Mees (2013: 2) we can agree that the benefits are obvious. “If you’re an English native speaker you’ll be likely to discover much about your mother tongue of which you were previously unaware. If you’re a non-native learner it will also assist in improving your pronunciation and listening abilities. In either case you will end up better able to teach English pronunciation to others and possibly find it easier to learn how to speak other languages better yourself.”
