Enteric viruses infect the gastrointestinal tract and are transmitted via the fecal-oral route causing enteric or respiratory infections and conjunctivitis. These viruses can cause symptoms such as nausea vomiting diarrhea and sometimes fever and are eliminated in the stools of infected people. They are also found in wastewater and sludge from water treatment plants and can be transmitted to market garden crops irrigated with this purified water if the latter does not meet quality standards for reuse. The aim of this book is to familiarize students and teachers with: the characteristics of enteric viruses transmitted via the environment in particular: enteroviruses adenoviruses hepatitis A and E viruses rotaviruses noroviruses and human astoviruses their classifications their pathogenic powers and their fate. To provide them with the principles of classical virological techniques and molecular biology for the detection and identification of these viruses and a summary of the epidemiology of water-borne viral diseases.
