The idea of human rights is thus as old as the history of civilisations itself having soon manifested itself in different cultures and at successive historical moments in the affirmation of the dignity of the human person in the struggle against all forms of domination and exclusion and oppression and in the safeguard against despotism and arbitrariness and in the assertion of participation in community life and the principle of legitimacy.
