This is a well-written and elegant work that will serve as a great starting point for anyone interested in learning about Tanzania's history and environment as well as for readers outside of Tanzania. This book makes an effort to look at how colonial environmental conservation policies replaced indigenous adaptive environmental conservation techniques. Additionally it examines the results of environmental conservation initiatives in the Morogoro and Shinyanga districts of colonial Tanzania between the 1920s and the 1950s. A commentary on the concept of Tanzanian history itself can be found throughout the book. It charts among other things the transition from indigenous environmental conservation tendencies to colonial environmental policies.
