Anthropologists' best opportunity to be of service may lie in helping governments and charitable organisations to better understand the cultures of the people whose needs they wish to address. Development efforts affect different cultures and different social groups in different ways. Anthropology helps students gain a fuller understanding of both other cultures and our own. Anthropological research contributes to the scientific and humanistic understanding of humankind as well as providing knowledge that can be used to solve human problems. The study of anthropology also prepares students to apply for grants in the sciences and the humanities.
