Groundwater is an important natural resource which is one of the basic need for human survival. However overexploitation has depleted groundwater availability considerably. Assessing the potential zone of groundwater is extremely important for the appropriate management of groundwater systems. Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were utilized to assess the Groundwater potential zones in this study and a composite ground water potential map of the study area was generated. The use of this methodology in the present study has been demonstrated for a selected study area in Maharashtra.Various influencing parameters like slope drainage density geomorphology and lineament density were hierarchically put to use and integrated with weighted overlay in ArcGIS by assigning suitable ranks for each category of these parameters. The weightage factor for each category is decided based upon its expected capability towards groundwater potential based on knowledge driven approach.
