Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is grown almost in 63 countries around the world but this fruit occupies a unique place amongst the fruit crops grown in India. All parts of the mango tree i.e. inflorescence fruits leaves twigs bark and wood are used for religious rites and for its various nutritive and medicinal properties. The genus Mangifera originated in South-East Asia and the natural spread of this genus is limited to Indo-Malayan region stretching from India to the Philippines and New Guinea. It is observed that as many as 41 valid species of Mangifera are distributed throughout the world and 11595 cultivars are grown in different parts of the world. India can boast of having the largest available germplasm wealth of mango with about 1000 cultivars.
