The English-language epic poem Evangeline A Story of Acadie by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was first published in 1847. The poem which is set during the Acadian Expulsion is on an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her quest to find her long-lost love Gabriel. Evangeline tells the story of Evangeline Bellefontaine a fictional Acadian girl who is engaged to Gabriel Lajeunesse and their separation during the Great Upheaval when the British deport the Acadians from Acadie. The poem then follows Evangeline as she spends years looking for Gabriel across the landscapes of America occasionally coming very close to him without realising it.
