William Miller gained prominence in the early 19th century for his beliefs that the Second Coming of Christ was imminent and would occur around the mid-1800s. He arrived at this conclusion through his extensive study of the Bible particularly focusing on passages that he interpreted as predicting the return of Jesus Christ to Earth. In Evidence from Scripture and History of the Second Coming of Christ Miller presents his arguments for the timing of the Second Coming based on his interpretation of biblical texts including passages from the books of Daniel and Revelation. He also draws connections between historical events and biblical prophecies attempting to demonstrate that the predicted events were unfolding. Millers beliefs gained a significant following and his followers became known as Millerites. They fervently anticipated the imminent return of Christ and the end of the world. Millers movement reached its peak around 1844 which became known as the Great Disappointment when the predicted Second Coming did not occur as anticipated.
