Exterior-Rotor Permanent Magnet Machines for Light Aerial Vehicles

About The Book

Electric machines in transport has an increasing importance. Intensive research of battery units has impelled development of novel autonomous electrical drives applied mostly in car industry but also in lightweight electric aircrafts. This book describes the development of a novel stator geometry of the exterior-rotor permanent machine with Gramme winding for an unmanned light aircraft. The electric machine is a part of the hybrid propulsion system where it is designed to operate as a motor or a generator. Parallel operation with internal combustion engine included also function as a starter also as an additional power source. The main purpose was supported also by developing another permanent magnet synchronous machine with two-layered concentrated winding of similar exterior-rotor topology for the electric paraglider. Development of those two prototypes included analytical calculations for obtaining geometrical and electromagnetic base parameters. As untraditionally high current densities were present in both machines the analysis includes also modeling of their temperature fields.
