Factors Affecting Spore Germination and infection of Botrytis cinerea. The Botrytis infection of cucumber fruits in a greenhouse appears as an invasive gray rot of the fruit. In the spring the fungus germinates from small dark-colored hard over-seasoning structures known as sclerotia. The fungus then produces asexual spores (conidia) that spread the disease.
