Behavioral Economics and Life-Course Development

Behavioral economics provides a lens through which we can understand how individuals make decisions that affect their developmental trajectory.

My work often emphasizes that human development is influenced by the choice architecture of one's environment. When individuals engage in regular leisure activities they are not merely passing time; they are actively participating in behaviors that are statistically associated with better physical and mental health outcomes.

Conversely the toll of caregiving represents a significant environmental constraint where the demands of family care over the life course can create disparities in physical functioning highlighting the need for structural support systems to maintain individual well-being.

The integration of these factors suggests that human development is a recursive process. As individuals navigate middle and later life their ability to maintain positive affect dynamics-the capacity to recover from negative experiences and sustain positive ones-becomes a primary determinant of successful aging.
