<p>The central aim of this book is to explore the shocks and transformations impacting modern Chinese national identity within the context of intellectual history. Beginning with the assault of modernity upon the traditional tianxia concept (all-under-heaven worldview) the author examines various attempts within modern Chinese intellectual revolutions. These include Confucianism the late Qing Constitutionalists and Revolutionaries late Qing local and individual identities the May Fourth era's cosmopolitanism the tension between cultural heritage (civilization) and national prosperity (wealth and power) and nationalism. Ultimately the author proposes a model of identity termed New Tianxiaism (New All-under-heavenism) to address the unresolved issue of national identity.</p><p>本书的意图,就是在思想史中,探寻中国近现代国家认同所受到的冲击和和转变。作者从传统的天下观念遭受现代性冲击入手,讨论了儒家、晚清立宪派与革命派、晚清的地方认同和个人认同、五四的世界主义、文明与富强之间的竞争、民族主义等等中国近现代思想革命中的尝试。最终,作者设计出新天下主义的认同模式,用来解决国家认同这个悬而未决的问题。</p>
