Family demands and career disengagement

About The Book

In this study I examined the influence of family demands on career disengagement using 92 employee-supervisor pairs. To shed more light on this relationship three mediators were integrated into the path analysis: family-work conflict career self-efficacy and the supervisor's anticipation of career success. Family-work conflict and the supervisor's anticipation of career success are significantly related to career self-efficacy. Furthermore the supervisor's anticipation of career success influences the employee's career disengagement. The results also pointed to gender-specific differences in the tension between family and career. Furthermore the results show that the supervisor plays a significant role in the interaction between family and career. Consequently supervisors are called upon to support their employees in role conflict as the family-work conflict can have a negative impact on their career.
