This is a story of a woman who has travelled far away from her motherland to a distant city in search of love and freedom. This story is about a Bengali girl Neelanjana Mandal. She marries Kishanlal who owns a restaurant and comes to stay with him in Paris. She finds herself caged in Kishanlals exclusive Paris apartment. She realizes that after marriage she has become a mere puppet in Kishanlals hands. She is no more than a servant to finish the chores and then at night to satisfy his lust. She chokes with this realization. She is looking for change from this dull life of a prisoner. She meets Benoyar DuPont. A very handsome fair blue eyed French. Neela falls in love with him. He introduces her to the streets cafes art galleries of Paris. He opens a universe in front of Neela. She gets involved in him they come together. Slowly she realizes that even DuPont is the same like her husband. He always gives preference to himself. He loves only him and not her. She gives a full stop to their relationship when she realizes that she has to keep her feelings aside while being with him. But this full stop unfolds a new beginning for her search of her own soul. This novel relates the struggle and efforts of a woman her mindset in this male chauvinist society while keeping her alive.
