Farmers' perceptions of climate impacts on agriculture

About The Book

Climate change is a phenomenon that affects all countries in the world and all sectors. This problem causes farmers to have difficulties in identifying their agricultural practices. In Mahajanga as a result of climatic problems agricultural production is decreasing from year to year. With abrupt changes in rainfall patterns farmers are especially faced with water shortages. This study was carried out through investigations among farmers. We developed questionnaires on climate variability and adaptation strategies to these phenomena. These farmers are composed of thirty seven vegetable farmers and thirty rice farmers. The farmers of our study sites have experienced climatic variations. Thus they have developed strategies to adapt to their impacts. The disruption of the agricultural calendar accentuated by the increase in water stress and the recrudescence of diseases result in a decrease in agricultural yields. Faced with these risks farmers are modifying their agricultural calendar. They are adopting soil fertility management water management and crop diversification
