The most well-known American poet of his time and one of the most well-known American poets overall was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882). Some of his poems most notably the lengthy narratives Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha have reportedly been read in every literate home in America at one point. Longfellow was a former teacher who pursued his dream of making a livelihood as a poet. He taught at Bowdoin and Harvard finally received degrees from Oxford and Cambridge in recognition of his poetry and is one of the few Americans to have a monument erected in Westminster Abbey in his honour.
