The present book Plumes coloniales féminines sur l'Afrique: colonialisme ou exotisme? Analyses of German women's exotico-colonial discourses on Africa is the fruit of thesis research.Books dealing with German colonialism in Africa usually focus on the deeds and actions of German men. The assumption is that German colonialism was a matter for German men alone. However German women were also present in the colonies in various capacities including nuns and deaconesses serving Catholic and Protestant missions and educators. Others had marital status. What stands out about some of these German women who arrived in the colonies is their writings on Africa and Africans which reflect German women's viewpoints on Africa and society. Five works by German women are the subject of this book: Unterm Roten Kreuz in Kamerun und Togo by Johanna Wittum; Zwanzig Jahre Missions-Diakonissenarbeit im Ewelande by Hedwig Rohns; Alfreds Frauen et Leibeigen by Hanna Christaller and Weiße Göttin der Wangora by Meg Gehrts.
