By far the best known of Fermat’s many theorems is a problem known as his “great” or “last” theorem. This appeared in the margin of his copy of Diophantus’ Arithmetica and states that the equation x^n + y^n = z^n where x y z and n are positive integers has no solution if n is greater than 2.
