The author was inspired to write the book after watching her young daughter Katharine putting pill bugs in bottles their new home. Beary is the toy of her son Ty who named the bear and insisted on its spelling. Elise is named after her granddaughter.</span></p><p></p><p><span style=color: rgba(15 17 17 1)>The illustrations were drawn by Karen who wanted her debut book to also entertain its readers after remembering the fun her third grade class had after checking out books from the school library. During the pandemic Karen began writing for a local paper </span><em style=color: rgba(15 17 17 1)>Southland Voice</em><span style=color: rgba(15 17 17 1)>. This allowed Karen to improve her writing skills. After moving to the Chicago area in 2018 Karen found an old copy of a story she had written in 1982. With the boost of confidence that writing for </span><em style=color: rgba(15 17 17 1)>Southland Voice</em><span style=color: rgba(15 17 17 1)> gave her Karen decided it was time to publish her story.</span></p>
