Formulation and evaluation of herbal oral contraceptives in animals

About The Book

The objective of the research work was to develop three combinational herbal oral contraceptive suspensions HOCS-M-I to M- III containing potential anti-fertility agents from methanolic (70%) extracts of aerial parts of Capparis aphylla leaves of Carica papaya and fruit of Feronia limonia based on the effective dose that plant and pharmaceutically evaluated. Then the study was taken to assess the comparative contraceptive/anti-fertility activity of individual suspensions for their effective contraceptive efficacy in mature male albino rats. The anti-fertility effect of HOCS-M-I to M-III with spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis effect were determined on sexually mature male rat through orally for 55 days and recovery of 110 days by studying various parameters. HOCS-M-I caused a marked reduction in the activities of spermatological studies and biochemical evaluations and 0% fertility rate. However more investigations are required to explore the actual ingredient(s) responsible for antigonadal action and for better understanding of the cause of reproductive toxicity induction of HOCS-M-I. HOCS containing Capparis and Carica is orally effective as an ideal male contraceptive.
