Four-Day Planet by H. Beam Piper is a science fiction novel set on the harsh and unforgiving planet of Fenris where the year consists of only four days due to its slow rotation. The story follows Walter Boyd a young reporter for the Port Sandor Times as he navigates the complexities of life on this challenging world. The economy of Fenris is heavily reliant on the export of tallow-wax an intermediate substance harvested from the native sea-monsters. However the hunters who risk their lives to procure this valuable resource are being exploited by corrupt officials including Steve Ravick the president of the Hunters' Co-operative and his accomplice Leo Belsher. As Walter investigates the situation he encounters Glenn Murell a mysterious visitor claiming to be an author researching a book about Fenris. Murell's true intentions are unclear and his presence adds another layer of intrigue to the already tense atmosphere. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a society struggling to survive in an environment where extreme temperatures and dangerous wildlife are constant threats. Throughout the novel themes of corruption survival and the quest for justice are explored. Walter's determination to uncover the truth and bring about change is central to the story highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of the inhabitants of Fenris.
