Set in the late 18th century the story explores themes of unchecked ambition the consequences of defying nature and the moral responsibility of creators toward their creations.The novel begins with the narrative of Robert Walton an ambitious explorer who encounters Victor Frankenstein a broken man in the Arctic wilderness. Victor recounts his life story to Walton beginning with his early fascination with science and the pursuit of knowledge. As a young man Victor becomes obsessed with the idea of overcoming death and unlocking the secrets of life. His studies lead him to create a creature—a monstrous figure—by reanimating a body he assembles from dead tissue.
