Remarkably for the time Wood began his career as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy serving in the Naval Brigade in the Crimean War.He was then commissioned into the Army and saw service in the Sudan War in 1884-85. Wood documents fully both his short naval service and his distinguished military career. This edition of the memoirs includes the two volumes in a single book. Volume 1 covers Woods family background and spans the period up to 1878.Volume 2 continues from 1878 and ends with his appointment in 1903 as a Field Marshal.
