The history of Methodism during its first three decades in Oregon affords an opportunity to observe development which illustrates the Church-Sect typology pioneered by sociologists Max Weber and Ernst Troelch. Having broken from the Church of England the transplanted Methodists in America quickly moved Westward and as they did their circuit riding revival focused approach took on many characteristics of the traditional denominational Church.
