The Novel Opens With The Birth Of Pierre And Marianne'S 12Th Child A Son Named Jean. The Froments Are A Happy And Prosperous Family And They Are Proud Of Their Large Brood. However Their Happiness Is Threatened When Pierre'S Brother Marc Arrives In Beaulieu. Marc Is A Socialist Who Believes That Having Too Many Children Is A Burden On Society. He Tries To Convince Pierre To Limit His Family Size But Pierre Refuses To Listen. Meanwhile Marianne'S Sister Hélène Is Struggling To Have Children. Hélène And Her Husband Octave Are Wealthy Parisians Who Have Everything They Could Ever Want Except For A Family. They Are Desperate To Have A Child And They Try Everything They Can To Conceive. However All Of Their Efforts Are In Vain. The Novel Follows The Lives Of The Froments And Their Relatives As They Deal With The Challenges Of Parenthood Love And Loss. Pierre And Marianne Are Determined To Raise Their Children To Be Strong And Healthy And They Believe That Their Large Family Is A Sign Of Their Strength And Resilience. However They Also Face Some Difficult Times Such As The Death Of One Of Their Children And The Financial Problems That Come With Having So Many Mouths To Feed.
