Furze the Cruel

The novel begins with Furze Pengelly as a young boy growing up in the harsh and unforgiving environment of rural Cornwall. Furze is portrayed as a fiercely independent and determined individual but also as someone who is prone to cruelty and violence. As Furze grows older his ambitions lead him to seek power and control over the people and land around him. He becomes involved in various schemes and manipulations to achieve his goals often resorting to ruthless and brutal tactics.
