Gender and the Written Word in Recent Art
English

About The Book

Words began to be used extensively by artists in the1960s. The Conceptual artists used words to critiquelanguage as well as what one sees. As the Conceptualart practitioners moved on in the 1970s a new use oflanguage emerged in art. When examining the use oftext as or in art from the 1970s through to the early21st century the gender of the artist appears toplay a role in the intention and application of thetext. While male artists continue to focus onlanguage itself - continuing in the methods of theConceptualists and many of them the originalConceptualists - women artists are generallyconcerned with the message conveyed by those wordswhether alone or in conjunction with imagery. Doesthe gender of the artist hint at the intention andthe use of the text? Does gender play a role inwhether the use of language will focus on the word asart medium or as the message conveyed?
