About The Book

Self-employment is reemerging in modern society. Many scholars attributethis trend to globalization flexible employment and the rise of female laborforce participation. However such observations tend to be constrained byoversimplification and insufficient micro level data. Although women's shareof total self-employment significantly increased during the last decades oftwentieth century in many post-industrial economies one of the unansweredquestions is whether the mechanism of becoming self-employed differs betweenwomen and men and thus results in different outcomes. This studyuses event history analysis to examine the effects of individual and structuralfactors in determining an individual's opportunities for entering into andexiting from self-employment. The author shows that labor market flexibilityhas a significant impact on people's career choices. In addition this studyalso compares earnings and job satisfaction between self-employed andwage workers. The book is addressed to professtionals and policy makers indeveloping countries. It is also directed towards researchers in stratificationlabor market comparative study and globalization.
